And let’s be honest… who doesn’t love a Bucket List?
1. Feed the Infamous SML Carp
Let’s start your vacation off right by stopping by one of the most popular places at Smith Mountain Lake, Bridgewater Plaza, which is “Home of the Pet Carp”! Swing by Bridgewater Marina to grab a bag of popcorn and feed the massive hungry carp! Some people who want to take feeding the fish to the next level even put peanut butter on their toes and let the fish suck it off. Hey, there’s no judgement here… This is super budget friendly extremely fun activity that every family can enjoy!
2. Sing Your Heart Out
A successful vacation starts with your mom singing “I Like Big Butts and I Cannot Lie” to a crowd full of strangers as granny assists with the killer dance moves… Or is that just my family? Well, every Thursday night at Bridgewater Plaza tons of people come out to sing karaoke! Even if you want to save your vocals for the shower, you can always enjoy your evening watching people totally butcher your favorite classics. While you’re there make sure you grab a delicious meal or a signature cocktail at Mangos Bar and Grill.
3. Visit an Alpaca Farm
Get your alpaca memes ready, because next on the list is visiting a FREAKING ALPACA FARM!! Smith Mountain Lake has three alpaca farms! The first alpaca farm is Smith Mountain Lake Farm Alpacas, next is Pacabella Farm Alpacas and Boutique and last but not least is A Goode View Alpaca Farm . You can take tours of the farms, feed the alpacas, and even hold them! *Caution* Instagram’s have been known to spontaneously explode due to excessive cuteness!
4. Soar Over the Water
Smith Mountain Lake is the largest lake in Virginia with over 500 miles of beautiful shoreline! Therefore, what would be better than flying over and seeing the magnificent views from above? Smith Mountain Lake Aviation offers exhilarating tours for $150. The tours will take you all over Smith Mountain Lake, Peaks of Otter, and D-Day Memorial. This experience is a unique way to see Smith Mountain Lake and you will have a blast!
5. Fulfill Your Golf Desires
Any Happy Gilmore fans out there? Smith Mountain Lake offers two great public golf courses. The Westlake Golf & Country Club and Mariners Landing Golf and Country Club. Although, if golf is too hardcore for your taste and you’d rather have a healthy dose of family competition, then miniature golf might be more your speed. There a few miniature golf courses close by; Hot Shots and Harbortown Miniature Golf. Harbortown is a course elevated 15 feet over the lake and offers a fantastic view!
6. Go Fishing
The lake offers a State Park, Community Park, and several public areas for shoreline fishing. Check out a half day or full day fishing tour with one of the many fishing guides located here at SML. Striper fishing at Smith Mountain Lake is some of the best in the country and some of the most sought-after gamefish in Virginia! Just a reminder, Virginia does require a fishing license!
7. Benny’s Pizza Challenge
Grab your friends (because you will need the extra mouths) and take on the monstrous Benny’s Pizza! The Benny’s Pizza Challenge requires you to conquer the 28” Pizza loaded down with Sausage and pepperoni. Creating a pizza weighting 8 pounds!! Benny’s Pizza is known for being “Home of the Virginia Slice”. Don’t forget to take a selfie with your pizza slice, there’s something about cheese grease that gives everybody a natural glow! 😊
8. Homestead Creamery
Plan a visit to the Homestead Creamery Farm Market in Burnt Chimney, VA to enjoy a taste of true southern hospitality, lunch, and a big scoop of award winning ice cream! Take a tour with the Cream Team on the farm to give you a glimpse of a day in the life of a dairy farmer. Y’all don’t want to miss this! Truly, their peach ice cream is what dreams are made of.
9. Wine Down Weekend
Check Weekend Forecast: 100% chance of wine! Bless your heart. Whats better than drinking delicious local wine while sightseeing the beautiful Blue Ridge wineries? Smith Mountain Lake is home to White Rock Vineyards, Winery & Brew Haus, Peaks of Otter Winery, Hickory Hill Winery, Ramulose Ridge Vineyards, and Brooks Mill Winery. 10. Historical Field Trip
Southwest Virginia’s roots run deep. Franklin and Bedford County have many historical sites and landmarks that are open daily. Spend a day appreciating the culture and history by taking a tour of Booker T. Washington National Monument, Popular Forest, the D-Day Memorial, or SML History & Dam.
11. Cruise the Virginia Dare
Spend your day on the beautiful Virginia Dare Cruise where a meal and drinks will be provided if wanted. Cruise around Smith Mountain Lake and relax as you explore the peaceful scenery without the hassle of having to worry about the busy summer boat traffic. This is one of Smith Mountain Lakes biggest tourist attractions and is a wonderful way to spend the day with your family!
12. Hit the Lake
Grab your sunscreen, bikinis, and your Yeti cooler and head to one of the many marinas around SML to rent a boat or a jet ski. You can rent a boat for a whole week, weekend, or just for a few hours.
